Double jokers...

An elephant, a penguin and a kiwi walk into a Central Otago Pub.

'Whats going on?' asks the bartender suspiciously.

'Is this supposed to be some kind of joke?'




Kent and three of his buddies have gone fishing every Saturday for nearly forty years.

One Saturday, the guys are fishing along a highway when a furneral processional drives by.

Well, Kent lays down his pole, stands up in the boat, takes off his lucky hat and places it over his heart.

This processional is huge and takes nearly five minutes to pass.

Once it passes, Kent sits down, puts his hat on and cast out without saying a word.

Needless to say his buddies are floored by his actions.

One of them finally speaks up and says, that sure was a respectful thing you did there when they went by.

Kent replied, it seems the least I could do seeing as how I've been married to the woman for over forty years!

If Tony Abbott is elected as prime minister, Australia could have a Kiwi first lady, from my neck of the woods here in the Hutt Valley, just a few miles outside of the New Zealand capital, Wellington City.



Margie Abbott was born, raised and educated here in Lower Hutt city. By all accounts she was an excellent scholar and enjoyed sports during those days. She moved to Sydney in 1983 and met her future husband, Tony Abbott,in a pub there. He was born in England and moved to Australia as a youngster. The Abbotts have three daughters who get their fair share of Kiwi cultural education, including the Maori haka.



Known as the 'Mad Monk' by his political opponents and a minister in the John Howard administration, Tony Abbott is on the verge of becoming prime minister of Australia, if the pundits have it right. If not he will continue as the leader of the opposition there in Canberra, because he has brought his party close to election as government this time.

Beyond the pale...


What three- word phrase originally meant outside of the area of Ireland controlled by England, but now means beyond the limits of acceptable behaviour?

Not such a great birthday result at the Wellington Sevens party...

Not such a great result at the Wellington Sevens rugby party for the host team.

The spectators performed admirably in their variety of dress-ups and dress-downs. It was an exciting and colourful display in the stands. Wellington has always had a great party atmosphere in the ten years the New Zealand Sevens tournament has been played at Westpac Stadium in Wellington City.

On the field there were many upsets during the opening day, including the Welsh defeat of NZ in the opening game. The Kiwis were pretty underwhelming in that game, showing an unprecedented lack of self discipline. Fiji and season competition leaders, South Africa were also beaten by lesser teams.

New Zealand beat South Africa narrowly in the quarter finals and Argentina in the semis.

In the finals New Zealand had England on the ropes but couldn't finish them off. England scored in the final seconds to deny New Zealand their seemingly inevitable victory. A number of injured players didn't help the Kiwis cause, including skipper DJ Forbes playing the final with stress fractures in his leg with the aid of pain killers. But sport is about the players who make it onto the field, not those who could have or may have! Congratulations to England for their second half performance.
